For an alternative economic system |
Trade justice by linking communities |
|
|
How does it work?
In India, the Just Change Trust
has initiated the Just Change India Producer Company Ltd. whose current
members are four large community organisations.
These members trade their products amongst themselves as well to external
client groups. Currently tea, rice, coconut oil and umbrellas are the
products Just Change seeks to link up with producer and consumer communities, (such as community groups, cooperatives, schools, and faith groups) who share a common belief in justice and equality and a determination to create alternatives to the present market economy. Just Change is a registered company in the UK as well. At present Just Change UK trades in Tea alone. This is done through a number of retail cooperatives like
etc., fair trade groups in schools and is soon to be launched in the Amnesty International and New Internationalist catalogues. ACTIONAID UK as part of its development education work creates awareness among primary school students through its Chembakolli Tea Party pack which explains the concept behind Just Change. At present communities can join this effort as clients – purchasing or reselling Just Change products. There is complete transparency in the costs and clients are encouraged to determine the price they can/will pay for the products and how the surplus generated will be divided. We are in the process of setting up the mechanisms where communities can become members in much the same way as in India. So that we build a global community that will trade in a manner that ensures not just fairness but justice. Just Change UK works through its Trustees and groups of volunteers.
